Geographic Information
Jon Peters, GIS CoordinatorLincoln County's GIS Department utilizes spatial information to aid in the creation of maps and data to support County departments and their customers. Development of a geographic information system (GIS) began in 2002 to provide spatial access to county records and information. At least 90% of County records contain reference to a spatial location. A Geographic Information System uses computer technology to correlate and display layers of digital information in a spatial format such as a map to give a better understanding of its makeup. GIS technology provides a valuable tool to assist in implementing the comprehensive plan, administer the zoning ordinance, integrate land records and assist emergency personell. Spatial informations entered into the GIS include parcels, transportation systems, land use, flood plains, aquifers, water resources, and public well sites. Boundaries of municipalities, school districts, fire districts, voting precincts and legislative districts along with other features such as topography, railroads, wetlands, soil types, and aerial photography are also used in the GIS database. These datas generally existed separately in paper maps making manipulation, analysis and integration very difficult. A GIS involves operations which can combine these spatial datasets to display relationships and provide information in the form of dynamic maps, reports and interfaces.
