1. Send a written letter to the Secretary of State office with your name, date of birth, and what needs to be updated and $2 cash, check, or money order.

4. Where do I go to apply for my new or renewal pistol permit?

5. How long is my pistol permit valid?

Your pistol permit is valid for 5 years from the date of issuance.

6. How soon can I renew my pistol permit?

Pistol permits can be renewed 30 days prior to expiration.

There is no grace period for an expired permit. 

7. My pistol permit has expired. Is there a grace period?

No. There is no grace period for an expired permit. 

8. How do I request a replacement pistol permit?

Replacement pistol permits can be requested from the South Dakota Secretary of State. You may refer to the guidelines listed below,

Replacement of Permit: (SDCL 23-7-69) - A person who has been issued a permit to carry a concealed pistol shall maintain current information on the permit by notifying the secretary of state in writing of a change in the person's name due to marriage or court order or of a change in physical address. If the revised address is located within South Dakota, the secretary of state shall provide a new permit to the person.

• Check for $2.00 made out to the Secretary of State's Office (This may be subject to change after July 1, 2022)

9. What instructors are acceptable for Enhanced Pistol Permits?

11. How long do pistol permits take to get in the mail?

Depending on the type of permit, it can take anywhere from two weeks to 30 days to receive.

If you have not received your permit at it has been longer than 30 days, please call 

Secretary of State Office (605)773-3537

Do NOT call the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office. They are not able to track your permit after it has been submitted to the state. 

12. What should I bring when I apply for a pistol permit?

Regular/Gold Permits

• Valid South Dakota Driver's License

• Valid South Dakota Identification Card
• Applicant is subject to a background check and/or fingerprinting

Enhanced Permit

• Valid South Dakota Driver's License
• Certificate from an authorized gun safety instructor. (See FAQ for a list of providers)
